STNU: Shut The Neighbours Up

Quick Specifics

Genre: Comedy, Aim-and-Shoot

Platforms: VR (Samsung GearVR, Oculus)

Development Environment: Unity3D

Scope: Playable prototype

Duration: 1 week

Project Description

This project was made for a competition called the International Games Concept Challenge (IGCC). The IGCC is a competition where teams consisting of members from the participating countries have about 1 week to conceptualize and prototype a game based on the given theme. This year's (2016) participating countries are: Singapore, France, Finland, Japan, Australia, and South Korea. My team consisted of 5 people, consisting of 1 game designer (Australian), 2 game artists (Singaporean and French), and 2 game programmers (Japanese and Singaporean[Me]). The theme for this year's competition was VR; We had to use the SamsungVR as our main platform and had to create a build for the Oculus on the last day. We won 2nd place overall and 2nd place in the "audiences' choice" vote.

Game Synopsis

After a long day, all you want to do is go to bed and have a nice sleep. However, every night you seem to keep getting woken up by your noisy neighbours. You try throwing objects at their windows and it seems to work. But you quickly notice that you get more sleepy as time goes on, possibly passing out on the balcony. Sometimes you try resting your head on the railing for a quick rest, and it seems to work for a little bit. Hopefully they'll stop for good...

Work Contributions

Most of the work that made it into the final build (there was some work that didn't make it) was programmed by me. This was also my first VR project, so it took some time to get acquainted with programming for VR.

Some of my work specifics:

- Programming the physics behind throwing the objects

- Using colliders to silence a neighbour temporarily upon a collision between a thrown object and the window

- Transitions: Player moving to seat, player moving back to balcony from seat

- Tiredness meter

- About-to-pass-out screen fading

- Samsung GearVR headset touch and swipe controls

- (Didn't make it to final build) Randomised buildings: Buildings to sink into/rise from the floor at an interval to keep the game interesting and to add an RNG component to the game
